Breast Surgery

What is Breast Surgery?

Breast surgery, in the context of plastic and cosmetic surgery, encompasses a range of procedures designed to reshape or restore the breasts for aesthetic and personal reasons. Unlike reconstructive breast surgery following cancer treatment, cosmetic breast surgery focuses on improving the size, shape, symmetry, and overall appearance of the breasts to help patients achieve their desired outcome.

Common Reasons for Breast Surgery

Patients may seek breast surgery for various personal reasons, including:

  • Enhancing breast size or achieving better proportions

  • Restoring breast volume lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss

  • Correcting breast asymmetry or uneven appearance

  • Lifting sagging breasts to restore contour

  • Reducing overly large breasts that cause physical discomfort

  • Replacing or removing existing breast implants

The types of Breast Surgery performed by Dr Henry Shepherd include:

Breast Augmentation

A surgical procedure to increase the size, fullness, and enhance the shape of the breasts by inserting silicone implants behind the breast tissue or under the pectoralis major muscle. Breast Augmentation can be performed for cosmetic reasons, for example to increase volume or improve symmetry, or for reconstructive purposes following a mastectomy for breast cancer.

Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

A surgical procedure to reshape and elevate the breasts by removing excess skin and reshaping the breast tissue, resulting in a more lifted and youthful appearance. The breast lift procedure can address breast drooping (ptotic breasts) caused by factors like ageing, and significant weight loss.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy

A plastic surgery procedure that combines breast augmentation (adding volume with implants) and mastopexy (a breast lift) to improve the size, shape, and position of the breasts. It is performed to address issues like sagging (ptosis) and volume loss that commonly occur after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging, by removing excess skin, reshaping breast tissue, lifting the nipple, and inserting implants for increased fullness.

Breast Reduction

A surgical procedure to decrease the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue, and then reshaping them. The procedure aims to provide physical relief from symptoms like back and neck pain, improve breast shape and proportion to the body, and boost confidence for those with large or heavy breasts.

Breast Implant and Capsule Removal and Replacement

A procedure to remove breast implants and the fibrous scar tissue (capsule) that forms around them. The procedure can range from removing the implants only (standard removal) to a complete capsulectomy (removing the capsule). The implant can then be replaced if desired. It is performed for reasons such as implant rupture, discomfort, or a personal decision to no longer have implants.
